What Are the High Holidays?
The High Holidays are the most spiritually powerful days of the Jewish year, beginning with Rosh Hashanah and culminating with Yom Kippur. The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that Rosh Hashanah is the “head” of the year, when the spiritual life of the entire year is renewed. Through prayer and the sounding of the shofar, we crown G-d as King and renew our essential bond with Him. Ten days later comes Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year. For 25 hours we fast and pray, rising above the physical and returning to our truest selves. As the Rebbe emphasized,
teshuvah means “return”—revealing the deep connection to G-d that exists within every Jewish soul and can never be broken.
